Googly Eyes

Google have just launched the google art project. The wow factor is the selected images that are at gigapixel quality and it is fun to find this:

and this: and pretend that by scouring over the surfaces I’m enacting some form of twenty-first century formal analysis.

But I’m not convinced that street view is the way to approach the whole views of galleries, the same digital debris appear as out on the road, and although the insertion of new digital matter into galleries can only be positive for media arts, we need other frames to view from and through.
I think the debate about whether the google art project is just like the real thing misses the point. The issue here is how we physically negotiate the sounds and smells and feeling of the gallery, none of that comes through as we scroll across yet another cut and spliced together visual space.
